Sure you can do some driving tricks to unlock concept art and clips/trailers for the movie, but that's about it. But the problem with the free roam areas is they serve no purpose gameplay wise. The Autobot campaign does it better, but the Decepticons have Blackout and Starscream. Now there was something I did like about the game and still do like.
Most levels are centered around destroying something or fighting waves of enemies. It loosely follows the plot of the movie. Now the story of the game is nothing special. I do remember my older sister played the game and she made it to like chapter 10 in just a few hours. Not like it mattered since I never got past chapter 4, if I was lucky. So everytime I booted up the game, I had to go right back to the very beginning. You know what the PS1 and PS2 have in common that I find super annoying? To save progress, you require memory cards.
The final reason I couldn't beat the game was because of the system I had it on. I eventually got used to them when I picked this game up much later in my life, but as a kid, the controls sucked and I somehow thought this was ok. In robot mode in controls well, but in vehicle mode, especially as Autobots and Barricade, controls suck ass. I just wanted to drive around as Bumblebee and have a jolly old time.
I never payed attention to cutscenes or objectives. When I say 7 year old me sucked at this game, I don't mean the combat was too hard (for the first few chapters), I mean I never had any idea what I was doing. However, many years later I would learn why I could never beat the game. First we look the console outing of this movie tie in game.
